PJ Harvey: My music stimulates emotions

"Some people call my music uncomfortable, but I think demanding is a better word. It is music you've got to pay attention to, it is no background music. For me personally, I think that people who buy my music want to be stimulated into feeling things, want to be stimulated in thinking about things. I have to admit that I wouln't put my music on if I wanted to relax at the end of an evening. It stimulates a lot of emotions in me, but that's what I want from music, rather than something that can either pass over me or that I can not pay attention to. I look at music and music making in a spiritual way. I don't want to sound too much of a hippy, but writing songs is not something that I can make happen. I allow it to happen through me."
