SHE IS NOT GAY , SHE MAY BE A GAY ICON BUT SHE IS HETROSEXUAL . IVE LIVED AND WORKED IN BRIDPORT FOR YEARS . I KNOW MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE KNOWN HER FOR YEARS . IVE EVEN BUMPED INTO HER AND BILLY BRAGG (NOT TOGETHER) IN THE SAME DAY IN THE SAME RECORD SHOP IN BRIDPORT.
I HAVE SIGNED ARTWORK AND ABULM COVER FROM HER .
I AM FRIENDLY WITH PAUL WITHEYMAN WHO SET UP THERE FIRST RECORDING STUDIO IN YEOVIL .
YOU ASK THESE PEOPLE IF SHE IS GAY THEY WILL LAUGH AT YOU.

this is becoming annoying, this "reclaim PJ's straightness". i felt her first album (the Lover song)and To Send you my Love were ridden with attraction or protection feelings towards a girlfriend or a girl friend or a daughter...whatever, a close feeling for another woman, which translates - unlike much gay lyrics/writing - simply pure love; it doesn't need to imply gay sex, just love on a wide, unrestrained level: love for a friend, love for a lover, love for a mother...sometimes, friendship can be made tense with attraction, and that makes it evn more dramatic.

Now just for arguments sake, what about songs like The Northwood, Catherine, Claudine My Inflatable One, etc.? But really, she has said herself her lyrics are not autobiography but storytelling, so we can't base her sexuality off of her lyrics.
But it's all inconsequential, as we are fans of her music solely (I should hope), and whether or not she is straight shouldn't be an issue. well, didn't fatlad mention before that (he believes) the environment conditions one's sexual preference. so therefore, if it's drilled into you that you have to be a man's man all your life, and if you're presented with no alternative (ie. you can't even risk entertaining the possibility of being gay) then you are straight.

Truly, i believe societies all around the world make sure (through family values, religion, fashion, etc) that women fancy men and vice-versa. Otherwise we end up with women getting on well with each others, not getting mad for super-masculine qualities that usually help to define a man, and get to raise kids between women. Next to that the other catastrophe would be that men would become the fancying objetcs of other men!! pure horror, for many men; that odd feeling of attracting blokes...
and of course, a reduction in birth rate, as one gender would not necesarily need the other gender that bad to settle for life or a good part of it and bump into the accident of unplanned pregnancies... sorry if my fictious scenario sounds Orwellian...just that i often wondered why single people are so often made feel like there must be someone they could get fixed with, and become that norm: a hetero couple!
