Polly
by the Kinks

Polly wouldn't listen to her Mama,
Polly wouldn't listen to her Papa.
She tried to make the swinging city scene,
And now there's not a place that Polly hasn't been.

Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home.

Pretty Polly, dressed as jolly as can be,
She's so darling, all the fellas do agree,
And half a million people can't be wrong,
Oh, I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home.

Polly wrote a letter to her Mama,
Polly made confessions to her Papa.
Mummy's proud 'cause Polly's still in chains
She's happy now her baby's coming home again.

Pretty Polly, she learned that life is just a game,
She is sorry, she just had to break the chains.
And Mama knows, 'cause Mama was the same
Oh, she's happy now her baby's coming home again.

Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter
Oh, Polly, pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty pretty pretty pretty Pollyanna,
Pretty Polly Garter
I think that pretty Polly should have stayed at home.

Pretty Polly
Traditional (best known by the Byrds or Roger McGuinn)

There used to be a gambler who courted all around
There used to be a gambler who courted all around
He courted Pretty Polly such beauty'd never been found
Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly come go along with me
Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly come go along with me
Before we get married some pleasures to see
She jumped up behind him and away they did go
She jumped up behind him and away they did go
Over the hill to the valley below
They went a little further and what did they spy
They went a little further and what did they spy
But a new dug grave with a spade lying by
Oh, Willy hey, Willy I'm afraid of your ways
Oh, Willy hey, Willy I'm afraid of your ways
I'm afraid you might lead my poor body astray
Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly you've guessed it just right
Pretty Polly, Pretty Polly you've guessed it just about right
For I've dug on your grave the better part of last night
Then he stabbed her in the heart till her heart's blood did flow
He stabbed her in the heart till her heart's blood did flow
Down into the grave Pretty Polly did go
Now a debt to the devil that Willy must pay
A debt to the devil that Willy must pay
For killing pretty Polly and running away

Polly
by Nirvana

Polly wants a cracker
Think I should get off her first
Think she wants some water
To put out the blow torch

Isn't me... Have a seed
Let me clip... Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride... Hurt yourself
Want some help... Help myself
I got some rope... Haven't told
Promise you... I have been true
Let me take a ride... Hurt yourself
Want some help... Help Myself

Polly wants a cracker
Maybe she would like some food
asked me to untie her
A chase would be nice for a few

Isn't me... Have a seed
Let me clip... Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride... Hurt yourself
Want some help... Help myself
I got some rope... Haven't told
Promise you... I have been true
Let me take a ride... hurt yourself
Want some help... Help Myself

Polly said...
Polly says her back hurts
She's just as bored as me
She caught me off my guard
Amazes me, the will of instinct

Isn't me... Have a seed
Let me clip... Your dirty wings
Let me take a ride... Hurt yourself
Want some help... Help myself
I got some rope... Haven't told
Promise you... I have been true
Let me take a ride... Hurt yourself
Want some help... Help Mysel

Polly On The Shore
by the Fairpoint Convention

Come all you wild young men and a warning take by me
Never lead your single life astray or into bad company
As I myself have done, being all in the month of May
When I, as pressed by a sea captain, a privateer to trade
To the East Indies we were bound to plunder the raging main
And it's many the brave and a galliant ship we sent to a watery grave
Ah, for Freeport we did steer, our provisions to renew
When we did spy a bold man-of-war sailing three feet to our two
Oh, she fired across our bows, "Heave to and don't refuse
Surrender now unto my command or else your lives you'll lose"
And our decks they were sputtered with blood and the cannons did loudly roar
And broadside and broadside a long time we lay till we could fight no more
And a thousand times I wished myself alone, all alone with my Polly on the shore
She's a tall and a slender girl with a dark and a-rolling eye
And here am I, a-bleeding on the deck and for a sweet saint must lie
Farewell, my family and my friends, likewise my barley too
I'd never have crossed the salt sea wide if I'd have been ruled by you
And a thousand times I saw myself again, all alone with my Polly on the shore

Polly
by the Walkabouts

If the wild-bird could speak
He'd tell of places you have been
He's been in my dreams
And he knows all the ways of the winds
Polly, come home again
Spread your wings to the wind
I feel much of the pain
As it begins
Dreams cover much time
Still they leave blind the will to begin
I searched for you there
And now look for you within
Polly, come home again
Spread your wings to the wind
I feel much of the pain
As it begins
Polly, come home again
Spread your wings to the wind
I feel much of the pain
As it begins

Polly put the kettle on
Polly put the kettle on
Polly put the kettle on,
We'll all have tea.

Suki take it off again
Suki take it off again
Suki take it off again,
They've all gone away.

Queen Adreena also did a version and it is amazingly beautiful!

I thought it was Lucy not Suki, not that it will trouble me too much either way.

For the longest time I thought it was Susie, but I'm quite certain it's Sukie traditionally.

Polly
by Keren Ann (Zeidel)

Polly left on Christmas Eve,
I will know as long as I live that it was all
you had in mind.
She was turning twenty-eight,
And I always thought it's too late to tell you.
I never cried

There was so many ways to hide
In the hours of waste.
And I will be,
More than it takes
To you

It was different time and place
How we used to sit on the fence and wait for her.
Like a game,
Polly knew but never said
The very little time that she had was easy on that day.

There was so many ways to hide
In the hours of waste
And I will be,
More than it takes
To you

Polly
by Echo And The Bunnymen

Polly put the kettle on
I met a man
And asked of them
He told me that
The pound was strong

I knew that bridge was falling
So jimmy put the gas masks on
And swam and swam
Up to the dam
And everyone came along

Don’t think we can talk _______
____________ making war
Don’t think we can risk it
Another heavy biscuit __________
Can I beat the count of ten
I’m lying just to stay alive
Dying in my _________ again
Taken to a dive
Trying to survive

When’s it going to take you
And how’s it gonna make you feel
You can’t even spell it
So how you gonna tell
If it’s real?

A bomb blew up my shelter
I never even felt a thing
I brushed away the dust and
Gave ole jimmy custer a ring

Don’t think we can talk _______
____________ making war
Don’t think we can risk it
Another heavy biscuit __________
Can I beat the count of ten
I’m lying just to stay alive
Dying in my _________ again
Taken to a dive
Trying to survive

I knew that bridge was falling
So jimmy put the gas masks on
And swam and swam
Up to the dam
And everyone came along

You & Polly, my family
by Don Nino

There we could all lay down
To go now as many times before
As many sins before,
As many crimes before.
There I go; we could only try,
To get out of this bar,
To get out of this car,
To get out of this scar,
We only try to be so close
And now you know the day is so short
I'd cry so much, I'd cry for you
There; you and polly, my family.
There where I could always stay
There I lose control and stay out
And still renounce my name,
For something that will remain.

After 'Polly put the kettle on' Id have thought the second most famous Polly song was 'Polly Oliver' the traditional English ballad..

'While sweet Polly Oliver was musing in bed
A sudden strange fancy came into her head
nor father or mother will make me disprove
I'll (en)list as a soldier and follow my love..'

..so she changed her name to Paul Harvey, strapped on a Telecaster and the rest as they say ....is history!
