Seen PJ live since 1998.. Show at Avalon was good but the crowd was rude and unaware. Pj only did one encore of two songs leaving me to think that she sensed the novice posers in the crowd...Anyone

she had a second encore on the setlist, which included 'the darker days of me and him' and 'there will never be a better time' (i believe--i was standing near the soundboard in the back). i think the lack of second encore had to do with having to get people in for clubbing at 10 PM at the venue.

i take it you're not from boston, then. boston crowds are usually totally rude, pushy and inconsiderate. comes with the territory. :-/

but i thought PJ was GREAT!!! c'mon billy solo was amazing. anyone else have the setlist in order??

oh, and the encore was four songs--'janet vs. johnny,' 'shame,' 'you come through' and 'whores hustle.'

i was front row, maybe two feet right of center, and i thought the concert was amazing.

i think, as hndinglove said, her short encore had more to do with the avalon opening up for clubbing at 10. plus, it was her birthday -- who likes to work late on their birthday??

you're right about boston crowds, though, they're totally inconsiderate; they're too cool for everything, yet they want front row for everything. it's a shame, but i tried very hard not to let it ruin my evening.

all in all, the concert was great. something that bothers me about fans in general, though:
after the concert, I heard several people arguing with a bouncer because he wouldn't give them a setlist. i saw tori amos in 2003 in minnesota, and lots of fans bitched because tori wouldn't come out in the freezing cold and sign autographs.
i think people forget to put things in perspective. i mean, a setlist is just a piece of paper, an autograph is just a piece of paper. they would be cool things to have, but is it really worth getting upset about? you know you were at the concert -- if you need proof of that, you have your ticket stub. the music is (presumably) what you came for, and you got that. pj or tori or whoever doesn't owe you anything. just be happy to see a great performance and go home.

It was a great show...yes.
I managed front row center. It was my first time seeing her. The sound was just monstrous (in a great way...). Her bass player just ****ing ripped. He was so hot I couldn't stand it. His aggressive style really made me crazy! I loved her guitarist/drummer as well...
The setlist for me was a little light on Is This Desire? Elise was a great and welcome addition to the show.
Who The **** was just demonic. She looked like Linda Blair in The Exorcist at one point growling and snarling. The Letter was an amazing follow-up, though it seemed to lag a bit in the tempo.
Monsta and Shame were my highlights. It's You live was also just totally mind-blowing. Her vocals shone the most on this track. The audience was completely enraptured by her at this point.
The show was not at all what I expected it to be. I was expecting a laid-back, multi-layered, multi-instrument affair (which is what I heard the last tour was all about). Instead we were treated to a raw, bleeding punk rock show. She was not bull****ting around. This show was bare-bones, hot-ass rock and ****ing roll. Her stage presence was also a little unexpected for me. She seemed at first really stand-offish bordering on unimpressed. SHe seemed a little bored. But then I came to the realization that that is just how she works. There are no grand movements. No huge theatrical gestures. Just a little shimmy here and there. Very little eye contact. That huge voice. And so many other elements that just ended up providing a fresh, invigorating ride. It was a constantly surprising show.
I met some really cool people waiting to get in and we all got up front, which was great. These really sweet girls, both named Kate, made Peej a birthday hat, with her name on it, which she didn't actually wear, but pretended like she was going to, which made everyone just as happy. She seemed to get a little teary after the obligatory birthday singalong, she seemed to melt a little.
We had a serious crowd issue. A small red-haired lesbian was bothering everyone in the front row through the entire show. She was elbowing, begging, pleading and being just downright nasty trying to worm her way into everyone's space. Finally at the end, I gave her a little shove backwards and she just went completely insane, threatening me with arrest, bodily harm and all sorts of bull**** she had no intention of going through with. Anyways, at the end, after the show (which my encores were ruined thank you very much) she went to get security to try and have me "arrested" and the guy not only laughed in her face, but told her to get the **** out and stop acting crazy. Everyone in the front had a problem with her. She called all of the girls either "bitch" or "****" several times. She obviously had some issues with mental health. So, then she just wouldn't leave me or my boyfriend alone. She was in our faces. She was trying to get other people involved in the disagreement. It was totally nightmarish. She was trying to argue the politics of gender and sexuality. She was acting like we were victiizing her when she was clearly the aggressor. It was one of the worst confrontations I have ever had at a concert. Probably THE worst. My bf Chris wanted to leave and she wouldn't let him get by so he moved her out of the way, maybe a little roughly, cause she wasn't leaving, and her little friend (who had a blond ponytail and glasses) that she was with started WAILING on Chris, punching him. I had to grab her and restrain her. It was awful. I can't believe that people are so desperate to make a connection with a ****ing singer that they will resort to having a physical altercation with a complete STRANGER. For all they know, we could have been total psychos that would have really hurt them. People need to exercise better judgement in situations like these. There are people in the world that would hurt you for much less, be careful. The second row was just not close enough for these girls. They used the "PJ would hate your behavior" thing with me, which is just funny, cause I think PJ would have beat her ****ing ass. Avoid these girls at all costs if you run into them. They are just out looking to cause grief.
Crowds are just getting worse and worse and shows I like to go to. I am certainly over trying for good seats. I am over the whole waiting in line thing as well. It's actually going to be a good long while before I go to another show again at all with some of the disgusting behavior I have seen lately....

Wow. I'm glad I watched from the bar! Everyone was nice up there and I had a clear view. I agree that Shame was great and who the **** was great, and I don't even like the recorded version.

I was in black, my bf in the pink t-shirt...
I think I remember you and your friends...you were all up front too, right?
Yeah, it's a damn shame about that unfortunate girl.
Thanks for the nice words...

PJ Harvey ROCKS! I saw her in NY 9 years ago and this show was incredible, raw. I wish I had went to the NY shows. Oddly, referring to the little red-haired girl Matt was posting about, I was actually witness to the entire ordeal. It was unfortunate that things got hairy, but I dont think that red-haired girl was to blame and definately didnt deserve to be pushed by two guys atleast 6 feet tall!!! I hung out with her before the show and she was kind and very cool. I actually saw one of the guys (possibly Matt?) turn around and push the girl for no apparent reason. It was shocking. She definately spoke up about it, as I would have too. My boyfriend was about to step in. I think we should all be more understanding of eachother and realize that its never an option to be physically aggressive; regardless. Theres no excuse. Let's be kind to one another. Peace ya'll.

I would suffer Boston again to experience PJ. That woman amazes me. What's up with the guys pushing girls drama in the front row? I find that troubling. I wasnt in the front row, but just reading Matt's synopsis, Im horrified that he can admit that he and his bf pushed a girl. Girls can be crazy and reactionary but WHO THE F*CK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE pushing and shoving girls. Think about it. Chill out.

ha, ha, i was at the boston show, a couple of "rows" back from the front center, and it seems I missed this whole fight you guys are talking about. That's a good thing, actually. I went to the second night of her NY shows and have to say, boston paled in comparison. In fact, if it wasn't for hearing Taut, Cmon Billy, and It's You, I would have considered the show a waste of a trip. PJ looked like she didn't want to be there. I know there were equipment problems, and she's a perfectionist so that had to of pissed her off, not to mention the crowd sucked. I don't get it-why pay $40-50 to see someone perform when you only know their one hit from 8,9 years ago? I swear, the ppl around me didn't react to any of her songs until Down by The Water, and this happened in NY too.

I was wondering about the show, myself. PJ herself was good - you could see her talent, but I don't know what they were paying the crew/band for. I'd give them a C-. E.g. she was perpetually giving sound direction to the mixer. Sometimes the guitarist was adding to the performance, and other times the opposite. Bass was good, though. What really got me was that it was her birthday. When they came back out for the encore, she emerged with what looked like one wrapped flower and a paper party hat. I have no idea why the tour staff at least wouldn't make sure she had something nice happen, like a bouquet or a nice bottle of wine for the occasion delivered on stage. I felt badly for her.

I though the show was strong but not spectacular. Highlights for me were taut and whores hustle. Was disapointed at lack of 2nd encore. Hopefully tonight's show in Providence will be good. Looking forward to it. Am going to try to get to the sound check if possible. Rock on Polly Jean

She was pushed after hitting me repeatedly. I'm sorry but just because you are a girl does not mean you can go around abusing other people and then using your gender as an excuse. I will not tolerate being physically abused by another human being. She HIT my boyfriend before he reacted and then her friend ATTACKED him. Are men supposed to just take it? Thats certainly not fair...in any case, I think we all were a little bit too emotional and reactive and we all should have behaved differently...there was no reasoning to be had for any of us...we were all irrational...

She was HARRASSING us from the very beginning of the show. She was not content with her second row spot. She was willing to do anyting to get up there. She hit me repeatedly in the ribs, legs, feet, and elbowed me, un purpose, in my lower back at least ten times. She was provoking trouble. THat was her intent. Believe me, I would have gladly given her MY spot to avoid all of the hassle and abuse. But she initiated a physical FIGHT with us. What would you guys do if someone was PUNCHING your boyfriend and hitting him in the face? I will most certainly not let that happen.
I also just worry that one day this girl is going to piss off the wrong person. A lot of people would do much worse and it scares me that someone would just freak out on a stranger like that. It's dangerous.
I am sure both of us were in the wrong, but that's just what happens sometimes. Man or woman, there is no excuse to lose it like that...

Wow I can't believe fighting went on at the concert- I was right there and didn't notice any of it. Then again, my eyes didn't come off of PJ for a second. I go to many concerts, especially in recent months, but this was my first time seeing PJ and I am a HUGE fan and I cannot remember being as enthralled as I was at the concert. I was just completley 100% enjoying the moment and loving every second of it. It was truly amazing and even with equipment failure, her voice was absoloutley incredible. I did notice some mistakes from the guitarist(however he was still very good) and I've been playing for a while PJ! haha. I was surprised to see such a mixed crowd. I am personally a teenage boy and I didn't think there would be many boys there, especially not teens, but I was surprised with the different kinds of fans PJ draws. The show was incredible

Lots of sound problems didn't help make the Boston show any better. I was pretty underwhelmed with the backing band except for the drummer. When I saw PJ in 99 she was larger than life, this time definitely lifesize.

I was happy with the boston show but It was really stripped down I wanted to see a hypnotic light show. But, all in all the music was really good, the old songs were played different from the album , like le bass lines and some of the guitar layer were left out. She should have played guitar more That's just my opinion. I'd like to see her play again since the crowd was full aggraviting people.
