Thank you so, so much for sharing the delight that are these pictures!

I'm seeing her next Friday, and hopefully Thursday as well. The excitement is building!!

Looks like a new outfit as well, I love following what she wears, so original & sexy.

How were Machine Translations? And the gig overall? How long did she play for? Encores?

The gig itself was awesome (as would be expected) but I was really jacked that she only played for an hour before going off stage. Okay so she did 2 encores but I don't see why we have to beg her to play a full set list when we paid $80 to be there. Is this her usual practice??

can't believe i am seeing her tommorrow night (argghhh) and on Monday and Tuesday. I'm a clever girl.

Cristen - it seems that she usually plays 20 -22 songs a night. and yeah, i have paid about $77 for the concerts i am going to.

I was at the Perth gig last night. It was a fantastic show, despite the rain which threatened for days and then finally descended on us at the show.

But...am I wrong or was she playing to a backing tape of her voice? The drummer was doing some of the backing, but not all, and there were two pj voices going at the same time for some songs...

Thanks for the pics!

The show was awesome. I was a bit worried that it might rain through the whole night but it only seemed to very lightly and it wasn't for very long

But yeah, The show was really really good.

Machine Translations were quite boring imo. I think everyone just wanted them to hurry up so PJ could get on. Although they did play for about an hour or so :/

Yes thats all she did at Somerset House in July. As someone else said she usually seems to do about 21-22 songs. I would have liked a bit longer!

I use a $450 digital olympus these days, and I get better photos than the $1500 minolta digital SLR cameras that I got to use through uni. I took 168 other photos - some aren't nearly as good, but they're all in higher definiton so I might get some printed out.

5 more sleeps 'til my next show!

If anyone wants to know the setlist, I took a blurry pic of it, and this is what I THINK it says.
fountain
50 ft queenie
who the ****?
dress
evol
victory
leah
elise
shame
good fortune
whores hustle
cat on the wall
uh huh her
the letter
me-jane
---
garden
bad mouth
monsta
harder
big exit
---
down by the water
darker days

That's 22 songs. we weren't ripped off at all. $77 well spent!

Again to mention the Somerset house gig. On this site someone said the same thing, that she wasn't really singing. The general concesus was that a lot of her songs have double tracking on them, and that's what you can hear at her gigs.

Umm... No! When you hear PJ, you hear her and her band play live. PJ and Pob are not the only ones who sing during the show, all her band memebers do. Not to mention that her performances are so idiosynchratic that she could never possible sing with backing tracks. PJ harvey is NOT Ashlee Simpson

She uses effect pedals (mainly echo-y type effects) for her voice as well as her guitar. I'd say that was probably what you heard.. That's what I picked up on at the Somerset House gigs, anyway..

There are NO backing tapes or trickery.

just Polly and band - Rob & Josh handle most of the Backing Vocals ....... can't believe this is a recurring theme

BAKCING TAPES- BAH! NONSENSE.
What you heard was sheer talent and hard work! All that after being on constant tour, if they were tired they didnt show it, they sounded & looked fresh, Polly seemed happy, the crowd was great despite the crappy weather. AN ABSOLUTE RIPSNORTER OF A NIGHT!
Yes, Josh N in particular Rob were was doing an amazing job on backing! On tracks like Badmouth, Letter, Whores Hustle and possibly Big Exit, what you hear is indeed much peddle pressing by Polly to achieve that 'wailing ehoey' sound,. During the intro to one track (dont remember which one unfortunately), her guitar wasnt strapped on properly, so as one of the crew attended to her the intro of course went on longer.. disproving this 'backing tape' lark, as no singing could proceed till our lady was strapped in properly!
What can i say, except that i was blown away & totally inspired, puts your faith back in 'Live Music'. we danced the whole way through!
HUGE THANKS TO POLLY JOSH DING N ROB... PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE COME BACK SOON!XXX : ) ;D

I'm going over to Sydney for the Enmore gig, but unfortunately have to be back by friday afternoon, so can't get to the Hordern show.
I had lots of frequent flyers from my Glasto trip, so I'm using some of them up now

To confirm. No backing tapes of any sort are EVER used in PJ Harvey shows. Yes Dingo is very hot, BUT have you seen the other crew guys too?! (with exception to the merch man from the USA tour)

wow!

I dropped out of uni earlier in the year to go travelling. My parents had promised me flights for years, so I said I wanted them june this year. By some fluke I got my glasto ticket, and yeah I got to see all my favourite bands and was converted to some others (polly included). Since I have family in scotland, I went up to "visit them" and managed to tie in a trip to T in the Park. So yeah, all this travelling got me enough frequent flyers to get another trip, over east this time for a 4th pj show this year

edit: here's a review I did.

PJ Harvey seems to be touring Australia almost as frequently as some Australian bands, and with four visits in as many years, one could be forgiven for assuming that the English chanteuse quite liked it here.

For those not lucky enough to catch her appearance at Splendour in the Grass in July, this was the first chance to see how material from her latest album, Uh Huh Her shaped up live. Performing as part of a four-piece band, as opposed to the bare-bones three-piece that hit the Big Day Out last year, the unique setting of the Belvoir Amphitheatre was to be the scene of something special, despite threatening weather.

As the dark clouds rolled in, support act Machine Translations tried their best to overcome a poor mix and win the crowd over. Despite their best efforts, the set fell far short of the mark, and few new fans were won on the night.

As the roadies set up for PJ's set, the rain continued to pour, with many in the crowd discussing Silverchair's ill-fated performance at the outdoor venue last year. Fortunately, the only problem was to be a small amount of water on the stage, which was quickly dealt with.

As Ms Harvey took the stage in a unique outfit sculpted from hacked-up tour merchandise, the dark clouds overhead were quickly forgotten. Wasting no time getting to the point, the set kicked off with a large selection of tracks from Harvey's earlier material, including opener Fountain, 50ft Queenie, Evol, and Uh Huh Her highlight, Who the ****?.

While PJ obviously took most of the limelight, she was at times in danger of being upstaged by guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Sporting an oversized shirt, unbuttoned at the sleeves and with hair over his eyes not unlike Robert Smith, Klinghoffer demonstrated his inability to stay still for more than a moment, and beat the living daylights out of his kit when taking up drumming duties on several tracks. Drummer and keyboardist Rob Ellis nailed every beat and every note to perfection, and provided backing vocals that added polish to Harvey's performance. Her bassist, known as 'Dingo' performed in a minimalistic black transparent shirt, and like Klinghoffer, found it hard not to patrol the stage while giving his instrument a punishing workout.

Following the back-to-back airing of My Beautiful Leah and A Perfect Day Elise, from 1998's Is This Desire?, the middle part of the set was devoted mainly to Harvey's more recent material, from 2000's Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, and new release Uh Huh Her. Hits Good Fortune, The Letter, and The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore impressed, while new single, Shame went down well with the punters. An unnecessary number of instrument changes - before almost every song - slows down the pace of the show, and seems to cut the flow, and with minimal talk from Polly or the band, there's the odd awkward silence, however there is plenty to look at, and it doesn't seem to bother the crowd at all.

With the band leaving the stage after just over an hour, the crowd could have been forgiven for feeling a little hard done by, and with many classics left untouched, the encore was inevitable. Sure enough, Harvey and band returned to the stage within minutes, and pleased the crowd with The Garden, followed by The Life and Death of Mr. Badmouth. Two or three songs is usually the average for an encore, but not tonight. Harvey was on a roll. Meet Ze Monsta, from classic album To Bring You My Love saw Harvey shed the guitar in favour for a whistle and Maraccas, and as her mouth opened wide to belt out the lines "big black monsoon/Take me with you" it was as though rock's shortest behemoth was taunting the rain clouds, daring them to throw everything at her.

Leaving the stage a second time after Big Exit, in which Harvey proclaims "I'm immortal/When I'm with you", the feeling had been cemented with such a fitting end to a near-perfect night. Hell, even the rain played its part. Asking for a second encore would just be greedy. But it happens. As the distorted bassline to Down By the Water begins, every last soul in the crowd, however soaked, begins to sing, clap and dance along. This was a moment to savour. As the curtain finally came down following a less-dramatic ending on The Darker Days of Me and Him, it really was time to go.

Well done! That was great! How does that night compare to the other times youd seen her? Its funny cuz i was being a real pessimist before she came on & was seriously not expecting too much (its a buffer to counteract disappointment) but i was thrilled from the moment the dark bass riff opend for Fountain How does UK abudience compare with here (im acutally from Uk but living here 3 1/2 yrs now).

woahhhh yor so lucky to see her so many times, im desperate for her to come back- this time im videoing or at least taking a 'real' camera! : ) Do you reckon anyone has bootleg of the show? : )

ps- my faves/ highlights of the show: Fountain, Me Jane, Meet Ze Monsta (incredibe), My B Leah, PDElise, Big Exit, Whores Hustle, Who The **** (whcih i dont even particularly like on the album- but way good live!), Dress & Badmouth

She gets better every time I see her. I didn't think much of her BDO 03 performance, but the Perth and Sydney (Enmore) shows were the best I've seen her play. I can't pick one as the better show, as they were very different. I thought the UK crowds were much the same as they are here - although I did see her at two festivals, and you're always going to get a bit of a lukewarm response at festivals, as not everyone's a fan.
